details of book

This is a widely used history of the first 50 years of the NHS.  From Cradle to Grave: fifty years of the NHS, ISBN 1 85717 148 9  is available from the publishers, the King's Fund (020-7307-2591) or booksellers.  The book does not deal with the reasons for the creation of the NHS, but what happened next, and why - my earlier book covers this better.

This frequently updated site is used as a teaching resource by degree programmes in health sciences and is the next chapter of the book, as yet unpublished in hard copy.  It deals with what has happened, rather than what people hope or think will happen.

References:  From Cradle to Grave (the book) is well referenced.  It is proving hard to reference this web chapter.  Hyperlinks to journals and official publications are sometimes available although "access controls" may operate and external sites sometimes change web addresses.  Some documents have been copied to this server to ensure their availability although this is impracticable in most cases.  Sources used include the BMJ, Health Service Journal Health Affairs, the Department of Health web site, and The Times.  I acknowledge my debt to these publications, to those writing for them and to those who have spoken to me about NHS and clinical developments. Geoffrey Rivett  asserts intellectual ownership/copyright over this material.  However, you are at liberty to download the text for personal use, but not for commercial reproduction in another publication or web site, or for multiple copying for academic or business purposes.  You may use material from this site referencing where practicable.
